In response to the increasing demand for highly skilled personnel in organic agriculture in different sectors of the workforce in Nigeria, a two-day workshop was successfully organized by the Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative (EOAI) Project at the Board Room of Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Abuja, on April 24 and 25, 2019.

The Workshop was attended by 20 participants from 11 Organisations drawn from National Regulating bodies of HEIs, four HEIs, Association of Deans of Agriculture in Nigerian Universities (ADAN), ECOWAS Commission, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Federation of Agric. Commodities Assoc. of Nigeria (FACAN) and Agric. Res. Council of Nigeria (ARCN).

The Workshop demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt the need for the two key regulatory agencies (National Universities Commission (NUC) and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) of agricultural programmes in Nigeria to support the development of Organic Agriculture training in appropriate Institutions. Furthermore, relevant HEIs in Nigeria were urged to urgently consider and address the skills gap of organic agriculture personnel by offering courses in Organic Agriculture.

To this effect, two courses were recommended for Universities offering agriculture as  follows:

  1. Essentials of Organic Agriculture at either 200 or 300 level
  2.  Organic Agriculture Practices (practical) at 400 level.

While for Institutions (Colleges of Agriculture and Polytechnics) awarding National Diplomas in agriculture  the following courses were recommended:

  1. Introduction to Organic Agriculture at ND 1
  2. Organic Agriculture Practices at ND 2

While wrapping up the Workshop, the stakeholders agreed to form a consortium that will handle issues on mainstreaming organic agriculture into the curricula of  HEIS in Nigeria and also assist in sourcing funds to drive the initiative.
